Boiled Egg
To prepare a boiled egg to your preferred yolk firmness:
- Large egg(s)
- Water (enough to cover egg(s) by 1 inch)
- Ice water bath
- Pin or egg piercer (optional)
Instructions
- Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil over high heat.
- Prick the wider, rounded end of the egg with a pin to release air
pressure and help prevent the shell from cracking.
- Lower the egg(s) into the boiling water using a spoon.
- Reduce heat slightly to maintain a gentle boil.
- Boil for your desired level of firmness:
- Soft-boiled (jammy, liquid yolk): 6 minutes
- Medium-boiled (soft, semi-firm yolk): 7 to 8
minutes
- Hard-boiled (completely firm yolk): 10 to 12
minutes
- Immediately transfer egg(s) into an ice water bath for at least 3
minutes to stop cooking and facilitate peeling.
- Gently crack the shell around the egg and peel starting from the
wider end.
